Today is the only day of the entire trip I don't have a planned portage. But I have a full day planned none the less. I'll break camp at dawn, and head towards French Lake. Once I reach French Lake in the area of the French River I'll look for tonights camp. After locating it I'll stop and set up camp. Leaving only the tent and tarp set up. I'll then paddle up into the far north end of the lake. I plan on a visit to the library to look up some details on the next section of this trip. I just love to look thru the old photo ablums. Then I'll meet up with a planned drop of supplies. Load everything up and hit the water by 7pm for what I hope to be a clam eveing on the water back to camp. Tomorrow will be a full day. Loaded packs and heading back south. Today we traveled: 1 lakes/Creeks 0 portages totaling 870 rods (a couple long portages) Trip Totals so far 40 Lakes/Creek/Rivers 41 portages total rods 3901

I've been told that the French River can easily be missed. But I'm looking forward to seeking this jewel out on this trip. Mostly looking forward to the solitude in the area I'm heading the next few days. I hope to paddle the French River to Baptism Creek. Doing 5 portages before arriving on Baptism Lake. Shooting straight down to the portage to Trousers Lake. Then the big portage to Cache Lake. I'll likely plan on camping on the peninsular point in the north half of the lake on this night. If I make it across the portage! Anyone got any constructive criticism for this portage? I can only hope it is as bad as they say.
Todays travels: 5 Lakes/Rivers 7 portage totaling 1077 rods

After the long portage on Day 8 I'll take a break from doing the other Cache Lake portage to the south, saving it for another day or trip. Therefore heading back west and south to Kawnipi Lake via Cache River. I recall a story written in the BWJ on this area. (issue Spring 2003). The story if you haven't read it talks about the portage I will be doing on Day 8. Just if you ever do this portage I'm told stay on it don't even think about getting of the trail. Right Jimbo? As I see this route on my new Quetico Map it appears to have 11 portages to get to Kawnipi Lake. I'm hoping to see lots of wildlife in this area. About 2 thirds the way to Kawnipi I plan to just walk the portage to Ferguson Lake. I figure the odds of ever visiting this lake in the future are slim so I'll snap a photo of it from the portage's edge for the scrud book. Providing I can even find the portage, several look for it but never seem to find it. I guess it's not used much then? Once I'm on Kawnipi Lake I'm heading to Mc Vicker Bay for this nights camp. I recall a camp there with a few interesting things in the bay. I was last there in 1992 so I was curious to see if it is still the same? Todays Travels 2 Lakes and one long River 11 portage length unknown so I'll figure an average of 120 rods each totaling 1320 rods Totals to date 48 Lake/Rivers 59 portages total rods 6298 qp

After a long trip on Day 9 I'll doing an area on this day which will be much easier. Providing the water levels are high enough. I'll still break camp early and go to the 2 sets of Indian Paintings on Kawnipi Lake. After paying my respects to them I'll head up into Kawa Bay. I'll look around at the mouth of the Wawiag River for the remnants of the old Indian village, then head up stream on the Wawiag River. With 1 known portage before Mack Creek and I'm sure a few lift-overs I hope to be on Mack Creek by early afternoon. Turning south on Mack Creek I'll portage a couple times and then be looking for a campsite on the southern end of Mack Lake.
Todays Travels 2 lakes, 1 river, and one creek 3 portages length unknown so I'll figure an average of 120 rods each totaling 360 rods
Totals to date 52 Lake/Rivers 62 portages total rods 7458 rods qp

Today I'll head toward Saganagons. Portaging from Mack into Munro Lake. Short portage into Cullen Lake. My plan is to be on Ross Lake by noon time. As I hope to do a little fishing this evening. From Ross to the narrows into Saganagons. I'm hoping if the wind isn't to bad to paddle into Moose Bay for camp this evening. Tomorrow will be a portage free day as I plan to meet a friend to re-supply just above the Falls Chain near Dead Mans Portage.
Todays Travels 5 lakes 4 portages total rods today 432
