Well, I am making progress. I now have all my stations built. Friday I was off work so I took advantage & got all my form boards cut out. Then Saturday my 10 year old son & I put on the station blocks & forms.
All the forms, cut out & ready to go
The Station blocks all bolted into place
The Stations assembled, lined up & ready for strips.
I guess now that I am to this point, I better order my cedar ;D This project is going pretty well so far & the time I get to spend with my boy in the garage will be worth it even if the canoe sinks. Woods Walker

Nice job, and the way the season is going you'll be able to spend a lot of time working instead of watching the Vikes on that TV in your shop

Hey WW looks great ;)BUT whats with the 2 rudders ;D I will say it will track great that way Satch,
They are my depth gages, they will hit bottom before the canoe does & prevent me from scratching it.
Seriously, for those that have not built a canoe, the boards clamped to the bow & stern stems hold a string down the canoe center line. All the stations are adjusted to run down this center line. The string is also used to set the station heights to the proper positions.

Woods Walker, I was gona let this drop but can't LOL! What happens when the string gets wet? AH I get it as you are running rapids the string flex's and the stations move up and down over the rocks that way you won't scratch the canoe up. Great thinking wish I would have thought of that when I built mine. On a serious note the staions look great wish I lived closer to watch first hand the building of the canoe. I miss not having a project like that myself right now.

WW,
Look'en good.
How carried away are you going to get with your strips? Cut your own or buy precut? Splices or full length? B+C or square edge?
If you're in/near the Cities, Scherer Bros lumber yard carries Aye grade cedar to 20 ft at the Medberry store, (I35W and 694(CR10) and D grade to 16 ft at the MPLS store.
Don't know if you did it or not, but marking a horizontal line and water line on your forms (in addition to the vertical centerline) helps with alignment and starting the 1st strip (if you're starting at the waterline).
Also, if you haven't alrady, think about how you're going to lay the strips, curved following the shear or straight following the waterline. Different designs look better with the different strip layouts.
Good luck, Dan

I am ordering my clear cedar from Home Depot, for what I consider the best price that I found. It is a special order, but I can get it in 2 foot increments between 8 & 20 feet. 1x4, 1x6, or 1x8. I plan on using full length strips that I will rip, bead & cove myself.
I know that I will need aprox. 65 strips to make the canoe. Any ideas on how much of what length boards I should buy.
I plan on laying the strips along the water line then shaping like a long football as they progress into the bottom. I have not marked the water line yet, thanks for the advise. The plans show the 1st strip starting at the gunnels.
