I just bought a book called CANOE PADDLES- A COMPLETE GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR OWN by Graham Warren & David Gidmark. It seems like a good book but I've been so busy building my stripper I haven't tried to make any paddles yet.

It's an excellent resource book for any boatbuilder.

I also reccommend CANOE PADDLES- A COMPLETE GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR OWN by Graham Warren & David Gidmark, but I also put together a manual on using powertools to make paddles.
Drop me an e-mail and I can send it to you. It is in a word document format.

I'm getting ready to try making my first paddle. I have read the book by Warren & Gidmark and Old Scouts manual. I'm working on a tight budget so I will be using mostly hand tools. I would like to get started with the minimum needed tools and get more as I go along. Would a spokeshave and a plane be enough to get started or would I be better off with a draw knife instead of a plane? Also what size of plane/draw knife would you recommend?
Thanks, Beavers
