I paddle often on a local river near home that runs through town and in the surrounding farm country as well. This is a beautiful river imho called the “Big Sioux River”. The river meanders through farm country, dells, bluffs and hills until it eventually empties and becomes part of the Missouri River. I tend to paddle the Northern portions of the Big Sioux in the spring when the water is up and mover further south as the season progresses. At times the river is to low to paddle, so I resign myself to a local lake or two close to home which includes a secret get away with some caves high up on a bluff that local legend holds Jessie James hid out in with his gang after robbing a local bank or some other place to paddle never explored before.
Over the last three years the majority of my paddling has been solo. While along the Big Sioux, I normally paddle upstream first. I have found it takes me two to three times longer to get up stream depending on the strength of the current. The paddling both directions has also limited me from seeing more of this wonderful river that I’ve come to adore, muddy as she may be.
The thought occurred to me that inventing a way to solo shuttle is necessary. Since I own a pickup, the next thought that came to mind was purchasing a bike. Not one with a motor but one that requires pedal power. Paddle the boat and pedal the bike.
Now a new concern has come my way. Normally I take my dog with me when I paddle on the Big Sioux when in the canoe while the water is higher. How in the heck am I going get a 14 pound Shiatsu to ride along with me peacefully on this not yet purchased bike? What type of bike should I be looking into? Are there any special harnesses available for a dog to carry in a backpack of sorts? I’ve been looking at the “Trek” models in the comfort series as far as the bike goes. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is all in the research stage. TYIA.
