A friend has just put his 1987 18' winonah sundowner up for sale with a price of $1200. It has wood trim, appears to be in very good shape, only a few superfical scratches, stored in his garage. He has not used it much. Given it's age and condition, does this seem a fair price?

I bought my Sundowner of about the same vintage for $450 a few years back. I've seen similar models go for $600 on eBay. $1200 seems high - though it is a good canoe for BWCAW/Quetico tripping.

As a general way of pricing, I would think that a canoe would drop about 50% of retail in the first 4-5 years of life. After that it really depends on type of condition, but probably would drop another 50% of the 4-5 year value in the next 5-10 years of use and then just bottom out. I would think that the $500 -$600 price range on a 20 year old 18' Sundowner would be reasonable.
