Hi, we are trying to work out with my district the ability to do live streaming from up in the BWCA in February? Has anyone had success with doing this or using wireless laptops up there? Anyone have a portable satellite or any information that would help me out here... anything would be appreciated... thanks. queticogal

The only thing I worry about is how the cold will affect the lap top and its battery. With head lamps, phones and cameras you can keep them next to your body to keep the batteries and screens good. I have heard that you can crack the screen on your cell phone if it gets to cold so I worry about the lap top. Of course the way winter has been going so far that will be the least of our concerns

yes, will have to contact it tomorrow - we still have some kinks to work out.. if cost prohibitive, then we will practice this year with video and during our second annual winter campout obtain a sponsor and do it that way but haven't given up yet~

You're looking at a minimum of $600 for the phone, $.14 (US)/minute charges - plus a capable laptop and video input device (web cam). Here's an article that discusses many of the issues: aerohost.com/SatellitePhone.htm. Another option might be a regular cellphone. I was able to pick up analog service in every area I went to except one. This year, I'm only taking the cellphone with a portable remote antenna (RadioShack $40). I only use it to keep the home front informed of our progress, plus I'm too old NOT to worry about a safety net! ;D I wonder why no one has offered to do something like this for the Kashahpiwi fire tower. Apparently, they need more solar cells to keep the batteries charged. If they use the radio for a short time, it takes a couple of days for the batteries to charge up with the existing solar panels. I'd be more than willing to contribute private $$ to the park service for support of an upgrade (with web cam) - I'll bet many others are also.

From the time I left Ely, went to the #37EP at Kawishiwi Lake, drove after trip to Sawbill Outfitters, and then on to Tofte, etc I had no cell phone signal whatsoever. Zero. Had spot checked during my canoe trip too, up to Little Sag & down via Boulder etc (I only brought it along to see if I ever got a signal) and nada! After that, it was spotty down the shoreline until I got close to Two Harbors.

Arne,
Not to be picky but, if you gave money to the National Park Service, not much would happen in the BW, sense they (NPS) have nothing to do with the BW.
