This is not my canoe The day before we got to Isabella lake some older teens/ young adults decided to skip the river portage. As you can see the canoe didn't make it but they did. Thank goodness they were wearing life jackets. They still have to hike out their broken up canoe for over a mile on the pow-wow trail.

What do you mean, Cindy? Perhaps this helps explain.

Ouch, that reminds me of one of ours that sort of looked like that many years ago.
Ours was wrapped around a boulder in the middle of the rapids (between Isabella River and Bald Eagle) and took 2 people and a "come-along" to get it out.
Also lost an ABS Penobscot there too. Well, almost lost, it was in pretty bad shape. One less seat, gunwales lost, 1-2 thwarts broken, dented quite a bit, portage yoke broken off. Took a lot of work and parts but we got it back together again and then sold it cheap. :-(

It was the rapids going to the west with the short portage. The ranger told us that normally it is low by now however with water levels high there was a 'small craft advisory.' We were a little nervous going to the portage but it was easily navigable, just stick to the north side of the shore. The water levels might be down now do to his heat wave we have been having.

My wife and I did that portage in Sept. 04 and you could just walk the canoe through rocks to the pow-wow trail and do about a two rod portage. The water was low enough that there were not even any rapids. May 05 we were back at the same spot. I wanted to avoid the windfall covered portage so I *almost* thought about taking the "shortcut" that the guys in the picture tried. We took the longer portage and once we got to the pow-wow trail we realized why they make portages. The water was at least three feet higher and the little trickle of water was now a raging rapid. BTW- I'm sure VNO is glad we didn't take the shortcut too since we had one of their brand new first time on the water kevlar SR Q 17. ;D
