The 1994 record is no more. Park and Litchfield, now in their 50's broke their own record just this past summer(June 2005) They had the entire route on GPS and took no-doz pills to keep from falling asleep.
If you ever get a chance to watch them practice, it's amazing. They had to average 5 mph for 28 hours straight. When they get to a portage, they both grab an end of the canoe and run across the portage with it. They do day fishing trips that most people take four days to do.
This is likely a record that may not be broken.

Basswood, QP and WW are dying to be able to talk to Park and Litchfield, or Joe Meaney personally. Do you have any knowledge of how they might find any of these fellows? If you know them, send them to this website. We'd all love to hear stories from these guys. IC

okay, gentlemen, are there any times down for women teams? and if so what are they? and ages of the women??? None that I am aware of, are you considering it? I will say that I maybe looking for a speedy race partner in July as I think my friend WW isn't going to be able to make it. I've still got my fingers crossed he'll be doing it. I was thinking it might make an interesting try at a first time solo. But I doubt I'd be very good at the solo thing trying to establish a record. I think there are several other canoeist whom could do much better. As a tandom group I've studied the maps closely, as well as my notes the last few weeks. A plus side, I feel for me is I've been on all of the route at some point in the past with the exception of the Twin Falls around to the Curtain Falls area. I think timing is the key on this as to leaving PP. Certain areas will require daylight to make the portaging easier. Two concerns I have are The Falls Chain and the Magline River below Sturgeon Lake. qp

Steve is one of our family doctors and my sister graduated high school with one of his sons up in Ely. At one point they were three hours ahead of their old record, but ran into a stiff headwind coming across crooked and only beat their old record by about a half-hour.

Thank you Basswood for the information! WW and QP are dreaming of making a name for themselves, BUT I would be very surprised if anyone can beat the current record! I agree with queticogal, I don't have a sprint like that in me anymore either; altho I can paddle all day every day as long as I can keep it slow and steady. QP is admittedly nearly over the hill and should have planned this 20 years earlier. WW has possibilities, but not sure he is a sprinter either. Can't imagine QP would want to "ruin" a perfectly good solo trip by flying through it and nearly killing himself with the effort. ;D
