One way to avoid that is to go to the bottom of the page and click on the "last 25 posts" link. Then you can see the newest posts without going into the sub boards
I believe it is the newest post on the sub-board.

Voted "no, but...." because it don't like to do a lot of clicking to see if anything of interest is posted. Also, a question: does date of last post on main board reflect newest post in any subboard or just main board? I will concure with Cindy,
If you want to see the most recent activity just click on the 25 most recent posts at bottom of page.
To answer the 2nd part The "Last Updated Topic" lists the exact time & which thread was updated most recently & by whom.
