I'm wondering what kind of tents you use for your families? I know some families use two small tents and some one large tent. We have done the 2 small tents that were connected by one vestibule but it let to many bugs in our tents so we just purchased a 4 person Kelty. We have yet to try it out because this baby is due any day So what kind of tents does your family use?

Wow the 13 and 10 year old don't mind being in the same tent as their parents? Have they thought about or suggested their own tent? When I was a teen my family camped in a 8 person canvas tent and we all loved it so i can see how your kids would enjoy it as well

Yellowbird do you have the Kelty Gunnerson (I think that is how it is spelled)? Have you used it a lot? How does it handle in bad weather? I have heard the lower screens can get splash up if not pitched tight enough. We will be using our tent in October I think on our fall camping trip, can't wait!

Reddcin,
The model name is "Snowfall 4", now discontinued. It sleeps 3 adults comfortable. I bought it 9 years ago and have only had to replace the rainfly (UV damaged) and a couple of pole sections due to stress cracking. The hoop design makes it a free standing tent, although I tie it down if its going to blow. The fly overlaps almost to the ground and the sides are high enough so that spash is not an issue. Without a breeze some condensation will collect and drip onto the sleeping bags through the mesh ceiling. Other than that I'm happy with it. BTW, Kelty fully warrantied the cracked poles.

I have heard the lower screens can get splash up if not pitched tight enough. We will be using our tent in October I think on our fall camping trip, can't wait! I'm not Yellowbird, but I got a Kelty Gunnison 4 at Canoecopia this last March. I've had it in a pouring rain (1.5" in about <3 hours) and it stayed nice and dry. My daughter had pitched it, and I had to make sure it was taut, but once I got it tightened up it worked like a champ. There were a number of tents in the campground that were actually broken by the rain and wind, but the Gunnison was solid. Stayed taut and shed both wind and rain. I was really pleased with it! I think there is the possibility of water blowing up under the fly, but I just made sure I didn't pull the fly out too far. I also think the webbing that tightens the fly has a tendency to loosen up, but not too much more than lots of cord does. Pam

Answering the first question now about what kind of tents we use for the family. It has certainly changed since the kids were little. Our first son, now 24, slept between us in a 4 man Timberline for the first couple of years. By the time we were up to 2 kids and they were in school, we went to 2 tents. Sometimes the kids slept together and sometimes the adults split up. When we got to 4 kids, we had 2 tents with me sleeping with my daughter and my husband sleeping with the boys. Now way would my daughter be caught sleeping in the same tent as her brothers! As we started losing kids to college, we went back to one big tent (North Face Bedrock), rated at 5 that can sleep 4 pretty well. One of these days I'll get them all out of the house and have some privacy I do think anything bigger than the Bedrock just is too hard to set up. This one is 100" square and will fit in most tent spots. I wouldn't have wanted the kids sleeping away from parents until they were 7 or 8. Pam (who is now down to only 2 at home)
