Some-one asked me not long ago about Farm Lake specifically.
I've never been to Farm Lake and at the present do not have it in my plans. I've heard the portages are long out of Farm into the Kawishiwi River Triangle and it appears to be on the map. The closest I've ever been to Farm Lake is Clear Lake so I only know that the Kawishiwi Triangle is beautiful and that one could make it from Farm to the entry area of Pagami in a day if they got a good start and where fairly well versed in navigating through the woods? I'm guessing as I have not attempted this but can say I can make it from Lake one to the North End of Insula in a day with out to much trouble, if this is any indicator or gauge for a good day's travel. The only area that caused me any confusion on this Kawishiwi Triangle path is Confusion lake it's self and once upon a time Lake One.
Can anyone share what they may know about Farm Lake and that specific area and the portages? I suppose we could all look it up in a book, but I'm hoping some-one here has been in and out through Farm, as I have not, although I have traveled the Triangle, Gabbro, and some of those areas near by. However, I'm Farm Lake dumb.

Nibi should be able to tell you all sorts of info on that triangle, he's been there a lot.

I'm not interested in info regarding the Triangle, Lynn. I know that area well. The info I am looking for is Farm Lake specific. Nothing more. Sorry if I mislead you.
Once Again... I'm Farm Lake dumb.

David and I stayed out on Farm Lake at the beginning of May last year, not long after ice out. We stayed at Moose Track resort, with little cabins right on the water. We were the only guests for the five nights we were there, but they were getting ready for an influx during fishing opening the next weekend. Nice folks run the place, they bought it a couple years ago.
We mostly used Moose Track as a base for looking at property in the vicinity, but we did go on a day paddle up the North Kawishiwi and into Clear Lake. Basically, it's a straight and easy shot across Farm from the boat landing into the North Kawish. There's an 8 rod lift over around rapids (possibly these are "dead man rapids" refered to by Olson in Singing Wilderness??) and a nice portage into Clear Lake. From there we explored the portages to Eskwagama Lake and the South Kawish as little day hikes, paddled the perimeter of Clear, and headed back. A nice outing. As we portaged out from Clear back to the North Kawish a group of four was coming in to camp, they were the only others we saw, but I bet it gets busy at other times.
Anyway, Farm Lake is an easy entry point into the North Kawish and if you want, through Clear Lake to the South Kawish, so anywhere in the Triangle, I would guess. Not much more to it. Farm itself is almost entirely outside the Wilderness and ringed by cabins and resorts, and even though South Farm is in the Wilderness it is just a little nub that allows motors and goes nowhere. So if you are thinking of staying at a place on Farm Lake itself, as we did, and day tripping, you are pretty much compelled to enter the Wilderness by going up the North Kawish.
Hope that helps.

Moose Track also has a small campground with 4 spaces right on the water. We stayed there before our wilderness trip last September. Nice place and nice folks. We were only able to take a short paddle out on the lake, but Farm is big and had a lot of wind so we didn't get very far. Someday we want to try again to get over to South Farm--just to add another lake to our ever-growing list.

Also, Farm is on the Ely live cam. I enjoy seeing it change through the seasons especially now that I've been there.

We were only able to take a short paddle out on the lake, but Farm is big and had a lot of wind so we didn't get very far. Now that you mention the wind, Wilderness Mama, I should add that it really wasn't an easy shot for us across Farm either because of the wind howling from the north. We were generally able to stay sheltered, though -- except when crossing the inlet from Garden Lake, where it is wide open way up to the north. We were a little worried about crossing that on our way back, but managed okay. I think Jim of Moose Track was kinda worried too, as he seemed relieved to see us when we returned.

Ok..now maybe this thread should be renamed, (naw). The Kawishiwi Triangle holds a special spot in my heart as it was the first area I ever ventured solo. Perhaps I chose it as I thought of it as easy, and close to areas I was familiar with. I did this solo two years ago now, not so long ago, and in September found it not so busy, and prooving to still be a primative wilderness. Last summer as I traveled Otter Track in the Quetico, finding areas of it took me back to the Kawishiwi Triangle.
Those that have traveled the Triangle know that it is a unique (now there is a french reminent... "que" of our language) and special.
I have a couple most loved spots to camp along the Triangle. Now that we have a Farm Lake education my advice seeking friend is looking for the best camp spots on the Triangle. My favorite is on an island facing east on the very top of the Triangle. Does any one else have a favorite campsite along the Kawishiwi T? any additional advise would be appreciated.
