Hi Ya'll this is my first post to this board and must say that QP did an outstanding job with this site. The plans are for a 5 day trip (only wish it could be longer). The route I am planing will take us through PP to Sarah Lake then to the Tuck River from there to Kahshahpiwi. Tuck River and lakes in between to Kahshahpiwi will be a new territory for me. Has anyone done this route and be willing to share some information? Thanks for any help you may lend. GG

I have been in all the lakes you mention by name. However, I have not traveled the route thru Tuck River and the series of lakes connecting to the South end of Kahshahpiwi. If you go, pls write up a trip report. Perhaps one piece of helpful information... Prior to this year's trip I visited a website that holds a database on Quetico campsites. cesium.cs.jmu.edu/arch/quetico/campsites/code/index.phpFrom this database (and map) I was able to put a campsite dot on all my maps for camps along our route. Many of these camps turned out to be next to nothing as far as a campsite goes. However, we found one on the south end of Kahshahpiwi that was very nice. Here's a link to a trip report that I posted on the Canoe Country Bulletin Board. www.network54.com/Forum/message?forumid=9927&messageid=1096319969Note that where I refer to "green dot camps" I am talking about ones that I gleaned from the campsite database. I use Fisher Maps and the camps are indicated by a "red dot". I used a green ink Sharpie to put in the new campsites (hence... "green dot camps") Probably not much help, but maybe some...

Does anyone have more information about the campsite database linked to in Orygoner's post, like who is maintaining it etc? I looked to see if there was more info about the database under another topice, but didn't find it. I have some information that I might input in there. A problem is I don't see where they explain their 1 to 5 star rating system. I know it's kind of intuitive, but different people value different things, and then there's the problem of grade inflation. I would probably give a lot of sites that just have one tent pad 4 or 5 stars because I usually only need one tent pad, but for others that would not be a good site.
Also, I'm a little interested in the database from a philosophical point of view. Part of the greatness of Quetico is secret campsites. I like having some information about potential campsites. I used the Legacy Forest website before last year's trip, but since it is hit or miss, it was just a source of ideas or tips to check out. I also got some great info from QP, but that is like a tip from a buddy. And of course we all have McKenzie and/or Fisher to fall back on. But I wonder if a full-blown database accessible to everyone doesn't take things too far and erode the mystery. On a related note, do I really want to share my secret campsite finds with the entire world, instead of a few friends or select group?

Ho Ho Yes I know azaela and have talked to him about the campsite data base. Several of the campsite added to his map I had in my data base. While on my trip this year I found an old map I was told about. This map shows all the campsites in Quetico. Rated 1 thru 4. 1 being the most used 4 being the least. Although it is an older map I scaned it closely and found most of the marking to be correct. Oh yes I should mention I took photo's of it too. I'll post some at a latter date, I had promised azaela first lookand I've been very slow in getting them to him. But Ho Ho if your looking for campsites in any certain area I'd be happy to help you out. qp

I guess what I refer to as the Wall under Quetico posts is closer to the Moose Area QP has marked on his map. His Wall is also almost as bad, that's the one I wanted to throw my packs down to the bottom on. QP has the 3 step portage marked, and I wrote about a set to the West in the Wall post, that go through beaver pond and is also easier. I often see lots of Moose where QP has noted. You'll be working hard to do this in only 5 days. Portaging takes a lot of time out of the day. IC

The old URL for the PCD should still work but you should update to w3.cs.jmu.edu/arch/camp/maps/quet-pcd . Orygoner, I hope you will post entries on the campsites (good and lousy) you visited.
