The quetico PCD at w3.cs.jmu.edu/arch/camp/maps/quet-pcd seeks paddler's comment on Quetico campsites. The site is available to all, although some of the comments in the database are only available to those with inukshuk status. To see all the information in the database, become a quiet journey inukshuk. (QP and I have talked about setting up a similar mechanism on this site to allow automatic granting of inukhuk status on the PCD to Quetico Passion members.)

azalea I have looked over the data there and was wondering if I missed it or if you had a way to put in photo's of those campsite? I have a tendency to stop and take a photo's of those campsites as I pass by. It would be a great way to organize those photos. Looks great you've done an amaizing job. As mention the qp will likely be setting up something of a simliar membership as the qj. But until then I would like to see those here not members on the qj to go and support the qj as in becoming an Inukshuk. www.quietjourney.com/inukshuk.htmlThere a wealth of info on the qj and those here that don't know of the qj please stop in and say hello to the gang there. qp

Photos would be nice. But ....
The PCD is running on a univeristy computer using a vanilla Apache web server. I do not think I can justify using the storage space to store photo images. If I did store photos, then I get into a whole management issue of making sure they do not take up too much space and their content does not include something the state might object to (hackers have been known to use sites that allow people to store photos to store photos that the state of Virginia would not want on one of their computers).
If the systems is set up to allow just links to photos, then the site has the porblem of outdated links. I know that eventually, many of the links will point to places where the photos no longer are. I do not like setting up a system that is destined to have bunches of dead links.
Another problems with links is right now there are no links to anything outside the PCD and any html submitted in any comments is deleted. This is done for security. Once the website contains links to places where anybody can supply the URL, the PCD could end up pointing places I do not want it to. Again a security issue.
Basically, I know many ways evil people can misuse web capabilities and I am trying to keep the PCD as a close to 0 maintenance site. Adding a photo capability makes things a bit more complicated.

Hey Azalea, I looked at the database: very nice. I was going to add some info on campsites I used or checked out in August, but I wanted to make sure I understand the system first. Is there an explanation for what the star ratings mean? This seems pretty subjective and dependent on particular needs. A beautiful campsite with one tent pad may be 5-star for a two-man group but worthless for a larger group. Is there a standardized meaning? Thanks.

There is no standardized meaning, except how much you like the site as a whole. I agree, different people will value different things. But to a great extent, that is an unavoidable problem, any rating scheme is subjective.
The one major thing effecting quality that you mentioned is number of tent pads. That is why that is included in the information you provide. Rate the site based on its tent pad capacity. Saying something is a 5-star site with 2 tent pads should clue the reader in that if they need more than 2 tent pads, the site might not be that good for them.
