WW & TL, How would you rate Alice (BWCA) for popularity? Is this a destination lake with a majority of campsites taken? Or is it far enough from the entry points to slow down the feel of overcrowding? A visit to Alice was on the itinerary of my '98 trip, but I had to opt out a day early when my daughter became homesick. -YB

Well what I have found is that whenever you get more than a day from your entry point, you loose the majority of the people. Now, you can reach Alice in one long hard day, but the average traveler will take 2.
The times that I have been there, sites were available. There are 16 sites on the lake, the 1st time I was there was in mid June maybe a 6 of the sites were taken, 2nd was early Sept. only 2 were taken. Most people will stop & stay on Insula, you might consider Amber & day tripping into Alice if you get a calm day, Alice is real suseptable to wind.

OOPPS,
I had mentioned this above, but removed it after looking at my map, I had Amber lake confused with Bow Lake...... so above information applys to Bow not Amber....My mistake.[/color] Woods Walker

WW, I checked out the MN Dnr Lake finder says Bow has a max depth of 7 feet and not much structure or fish. Amber has more structure and more clarity and depth. Has a few walleyes also. Do you like Bow because less people go there or do you know something the DNR doesn't? Brad

There have been many times when we have been the only canoes camped on Alice - especially June. Other times there have been many camped there - especially in August.

Brad The DNR may be correct about the water depth, but I can assure you it is 5 times clearer than Amber......Structure?..... mostly sand bottom..... as for fish? .... we didn't fish it but I can promise you there are native bass in there "Large Mouth".
I liked Bow because nobody goes in there, dead end lake with no campsites, would be a great place to stay with a PMA permit.

Rats! Here I was hoping for a double top secret honey hole. I do like fishing bass in clear water where you can see them hit the lures. So if we get into that area this spring it might be a good day trip.
