Hi all, I am a long time lurker on both the QJ and CCBB. I have posted a few times on QJ and for some reason can't post on CCBB. Anyway, my canoe partner and I are in the planning stages of our Q trip next year. We are probably going to take a 7-8 day trip in June or July. I have been thinking about going to Suzanette/Conmee/Burt area. Not sure of an entry point yet, may try an up and back from PP or may look into getting a tow from Crane Lake to one of the EP's.
We usually center our trips around fishing, and usually paddle in 2 days and set up camp for a couple then try to cover different territory on the way out taking lay over days whenever along the way.
Under normal circumstances, can you make it to Suzanette from PP in two days? Does anyone have any info on campsites, fishing, other info on the lakes in the area. We have also thought about Brent as well.
I should add that we have done several trips to BW and one last year from Stanton Bay to Camel and out at Nym, in the Q.
Any info, would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome aboard Maverick A few things I know about the area of interest. In 97 we did a 5 day loop up from PP. Went to Kahshahpiwi ,Joyce, Marj, Burt McIntyre Sarah and out. Great 5 day trip. The portage location on Kahshahpiwi is kind of easy to miss but its there just look for the steep hill. I would think having 7 or 8 days that Suz and Conmee would be a great side trip. Theres a decent Campsite on the west side of the Island on Marj Lake. I'll look back in my notes and see what all I can find for you. qp

I may have a little information that bears on your plans. In 2001 we made a trip that included your route. We left Tom and Woods on Moose Lk. We paddled to Prairie Portage (no tow). The weather was pretty good...winds reasonable. We camped the first night on the island just as you enter North Bay of Basswood Lk after portaging in from Burke Creek.
The second night was spent on Side Lake and the third night on McIntyre camped on the point in the south end of the lake just across from the portage to Sarah Lk. The next day we arrived early at an island camp on the east end of Brent. Just across Brent to the north of this camp is the southern route to portage from Brent into Suzanette. If you went futher west there's at least one nice camp near the portage into Conmee.
I do think, weather permitting, you could get to Brent in two days. You'd get some exercise and wouldn't be starting late or stopping early, but doable.
I long to go back and fish Suzanette. Caught very nice smallmouth there...also in Burt. Didn't do so good in Brent, but it was the fisherman not the fish. And, I long to go back and try out Conmee. I've heard too many good walleye stories not to want to fish it. I also liked McIntyre a lot. Caught some largemouth bass the evening we were there. But it was windy and I could not fish by myself in the canoe too well. Caught lake trout trolling up McIntyre...not really fishing too much...just as we traveled. And there is some beautiful looking water around the islands at the north end of McIntyre that I would love to fish. Nice camps there too.
That's not much help, but maybe a little...

Hi Maverick, I just posted my first entry. Sounds like we are doing symilar trips, about the same time. We're aiming for a McAree entry point in early July, and hope to get into Conmee, Suzanette, and Burt. We haven't been on a trip for 13 years...so I will be quite interested in the information on this area.
Thanks, Fishguts

I'm new to this site, but I've been paddling in the BWCAW/Quetico area since 1969. We have made 2 trips into Suzanette. Like you, we primarily go for the fishing. The last trip was this past September. We made it to Suzanette in 2 days, but only because we took a tow from La Tourell's through PP and all the way to Washington Island. From there we canoed north and then northwest on Basswood to the portage to Kett, Tuck, and then into Sarah. We camped the first night at the southwestern end of Sarah and then made it into Suzanette the next day. It would have taken us 3 days if we had gone through North Bay. There is a nice campsite on the first island to the left after you enter the main part of Suzanette. The fishing this time around was not as good as when I went in 1992, but we still caught a good number of fish including all 4 major species. Let me know if you have any particular questions and I will try to answer them. Dave

Fishguts, yeah we got an entry permit for Bottle Portage on June 10th. We plan on heading up through Argo, Darky, Brent, and staying on Suz for a couple days. We will then probably come out at the entry point you are using.
If anyone has any fishing campsite info on Brent and Suz, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also looking at doing a side trip through Burt to Gamblemater. If anyone has been there, please let me know about portage/bushwhack conditions.
Thanks.
