I'm going to build a new Kevlar canoe this year (maybe three!). I'm using Jim Moran's technique of building a male mould and laying Kevlar, then s-glass, etc. (“Building Your Kevlar Canoe” by James Moran). The only real problem we had last time was keeping the Kevlar from sticking to the mould. We used all the standard wax and mould release techniques, but still got some damage to the mould. In addition, the wax was reallytough to remove from the inside of the canoe. I'd like to try covering the mould with something like saran wrap. I know saran wrap can be used in small projects, and special cases. I'd really like to use something like 3M window covering and shrink it to the mould. I was wondering if anyone had tried something like that?

Shippy, on the CCBB just used shrink wrap over the top of the stripper he is building & then did a Kevlar layup using the stripper as his mould. I know he had a little trouble near the tumble home area getting the wrap to follow the contour. He said he didn't have any problems getting it off or damaging the stripper. He did this after glassing the stripper, but before removing it from the forms.
I don't have time this morning or I would post a few links for you.
Considering doing the same thing, when I get to that point with my 38.

Found the reference to "Shippy" on CCBB (and associated pics) - thanks!

I've started a "support forum" for those who are interested. It's primarily geared towards sharing tips and experiences for those who are using James Moran's method ("Building Your Kevlar Canoe"). Feel free to join - groups.yahoo.com/group/KevlarCanoe/Using current Kevlar/epoxy/glass costs, looks like you could build one for around $800.

Why not start it on one of these forums, they are free & allow posting of photos in threads. Along with many other advantages. I hate the Yahoo format,
Here is one that I been thinking of starting myself & it could easily have a Kevlar section. canoebuilders.proboards50.com/index.cgi
