I will be in group of 4 in the boundary waters for 10 days. We will be cooking some breakfast and all dinners on a propane stove. Any advice on the number of propane tanks we will need for cooking?

moke Are you referring to the coffee can size green tanks or the high efficiency propane tanks? WW and I cooked I think 18 -20 meals on his 20 oz tank. Most was just boiling water. He uses the light weight type tanks. I'd look for him to reply to this post in the next day or two. qp P.S. Don't be shy go ahead and register up and become a member. Were all like family here.

I would safely guess you should figure at least 1 tank per person this is figuring meals only. If you drink a LOT of coffee as I do you might want to add another. I'm sure Woods walker will see this post in the am and likely reply to it. The really nice thing I liked about his propane tanks. You can crush them when they are empty and they take up very little space in the pack. Welcome to the qp. Bo

1st things 1st....Welcome to the QP BB
Lets see when my uncle & myself used the big green tanks for our 10 day trips, we generally only used 1 to 1-1/2 tank of propane. But neither of us drink coffee, we used it to boil water & fry fish. I think qp has it figured about right, I would take 4 tanks to be safe.
If you have the extra money & want to save on ALOT of weight look into the stove I have. It is a Coleman Exponet Xtream & uses the light weight Power Max fuel cartridges. I can boil water in less than a minute or simmer it down to cook pancakes without burning them. I love this stove & would recomend it to anyone. As qp mentioned when the Power Max tanks are empty you use a puncture tool that comes with it & then flatten it right out, they weigh nothing when empty, unlike the big green tanks.
BTW you can pick up Power Max Fuel for about $2-$6 at most outdoor stores. For 4 guys 10 days, I would bring 2 tanks.
Also you can pick up a light weight Xcursion Lantern that runs on the Power Max fuel & I would bring one of the smaller tanks for the lantern.
NOTE: All the brand names above are links to their site....just click on them.

I used to use a single burner propane stove but don't any longer. Still, I figured out a use rate. A 16.4 oz. cylinder bottle runs approximately 21,600 BTU’s. So, for the single burner model of stove that I had (and I assume others are similar) running at full 8,000 BTU it would last approximately 2.7 hours.
So if you figure out how long you need to run it, you can figure out how much you need. Of course, it would be foolish not to give yourself a margin of error. In other words, take a bit more than what you figured out.
