At Copia I was able to visit with the folks from Harken and am thinking of purchasing their hoist system. Hoister HoistIt seems to be reasonably priced and looks easy to install along with operate. Has anyone else had any experience with thier products or have any information to share pertaining to canoe storage? TIA k

The canoes are not so heavy that I feel I need a hoist to get them up into the air in the garage.
I made a 2x4 frame and cover the lower 2x4 with some carpet or other soft material to protect the gunwales. 2 frames are made and spaced far enough apart to allow for easy moving and retrieving of canoes. These 2 frames are bolted to the ceiling with lag bolts into the roof trusses of the garage. The canoes are now up and out of the way and I spent maybe $5 making the whole unit. When I moved I unbolted the racks from the ceiling and took it with me. I store 2 canoes in my one rack as I made it wide enough for both.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't have to store their canoes in the garage. When my wife and I got married in December, we found the perfect house... It had a 28 ft. boat storage area for my 18 ft flat bottom. A 32 ft covered RV parking attached to the house, a 20 x 20 lockable shed for my lawnmowers and yard equipment on one side and all of my canoes and paddling equipment on the other side. It also has a 16 by 20 workshop where I may someday try to build my own canoe. It is attached to the car garage all of which is attached to the house. It has 2.5 acres of land, 2/3 of it wooded. A 5 ft firepit in the backyard where we can sit in the evenings and have a fire to relax by... Could not have drawn it up better or built it better myself... And the best part of it is that the spouse and I both have 5 minute commutes to work... Plenty of room for us and the 4 kids and 3 dogs to run and play...

I have a double garage, detached from the house, live in the northern part of the great plains, so to speak. I like the "2 x 4" idea Bogs..as it is cheap, but because space as at a premium in my pack rat world...probably not for me at this time. Geeze... good for you Arkansasman. I envy you. Reddcin, thanks again. Cabelas alternative looks like it will work and is not as hard on the wallet as Hoisters version is. I'll let you all know what ever I do decide to do as it works its self out. Any more ideas or practiced techniques would be appreciated.
