“Canoe Country Wildlife,” and “Canoe Country Flora,” by Mark “Sparky” Stensaas
The observant BWCA and Quetico canoe-camper will want to have these two books in their personal libraries. These two volumes are more than your average field guides; they are written in informative and easy-going humorous style, fun to read and attractive to a wide variety of age levels. Each entry includes delightful sketches, identifying characteristics, background of the species, and features that makes the animal or plant fascinating to those who happen to find it in the wilderness.
These books provide an ideal way to introduce the natural world to youngsters. The margins include extra facts which captivate the reader weaving legends and lore about the plant or animal, offering activities to attract wildlife or to find their nests, including a craft idea or recipe to be used with edible plants, and providing some additional trivia associated with the species. The page following each category offers a check-off list for the reader to mark after locating each plant or animal.
Both books are published by Pfeifer-Hamilton (1993, 1996) and are available at your local book store.

I took my then 10 year old son on his first trip last june. When he wasnt swimming he had his nose in the "canoe country wildlife" book. He just loved it. I, too, enjoyed it and appreciated the straight forward easy to read format. Great book that comes with us each trip. I still need to pick up the "flora" book
