"Bush Pilots, Legends of the Old & Bold," by Bob Cary & Jack Hautala
Bush Pilots is the latest of Bob Cary’s books, and this time he teams up with bush pilot Jack Hautala to chronicle the history of the float planes in the Ely area. The well-illustrated book documents notable wilderness pilots who flew with few technological instruments and sometimes under adverse weather conditions. Some stories are humerous while others are tragic, all of them impressive.
A pocket in the back of the book contains a CD with added tales of daring courage. Several of today’s Forest Service pilots share new stories which include the notorious 1999 storm. Sometimes the sound of an airplane engine flying over a lonely wilderness lake is distracting when I am seeking solitude; after reading this book, however, I just look up and smile.
Bush Pilots was published in 2003 and is available at most book stores.
