Huge influx of owls along the north shore this autumn. I've seen hundreds (working night shifts). Great horned owls, snow owls, and Canadian Greys (which are huge) seem most prominent. DNR says it may be due to a "food crash" in Canada.
Makes me think of Canadian trips I've done the last few years. Hardly see any wild life. At home, on the other hand, I see tons of wildlife. Every time I step in the woods I see so many critters I wonder where they all come from.
I'd imagine low fur prices account for some of the furbearers. Only place I don't see a lot of game these days is in the BWCA and Quetico. Wonder why that is? Used to be the only place we'd ever see eagles and moose. Now I see eagles around home almost every day, and moose about once a week on the road. The nesting pair of eagles that live on the river stay year round (river never freezes).
Owls are an ill omen, a sign of evil or death to Ojibwe. Though I don't believe in that, they make me uncomfortable - plus I don't think their presence does the grouse or rabbit population any good.
