Friday, May 6 through Friday May 13, 2005
Announcing one week fur trade re-enactment canoe trip - short tour of a portion of the
Voyageur's Highway between
Minnesota/Ontario, Trailhead to Mudro Lake, Fourtown Lake, Horse
Lake,
Horse River, Lower Basswood Falls with side trip to Wheelbarrow
Falls,
Painted Rocks, Table Rock, Crooked Lake, Curtain Falls, Iron Lake,
Rebeccah Falls, Bottle Lake, Lac la Croix, Boulder Bay, Boulder
River,
Agnes Lake, Nina Moose River, Nina Moose Lake, Nina Moose River to
trailhead. One day layover allowed.
CLOTHING AND ACCOUTREMENTS will be 1775 to 1800 - with a few
exceptions noted below.
ADVERTISING FOR NORTHWEST BOURGEOUIS AND CLERK. Bourgeouis should be arrogant and imperious. Clerk should be the same toward engages but servile when dealing with bourgeouis (LOL - don't go to great lengths with this however, as engages have their own ways of retaliating). Bourgeouis and clerk must be dressed in knee breeches or drop front trousers with weskit, decent linen, great coat, and tricorn. We will try to locate a couple of bottles of maderia to make your stay in la pays d'en haute more livable.
Historic site of Northwest Company fur trade operations. A few motors
on Lac la Croix - otherwise none.
As this is a lot of ground to cover with archaic gear - there are some requirements which
are necessary to a good trip.
-Must be fit
-All gear in one large pack with shoulder straps and tumpline - no
more than 65 pounds (packs will be checked and weighed)
-No small packs, bundles, boxes or cassettes - EVERYTHING must be inside your one large
pack - this is extremely necessary to the ability of the group to travel efficiently
-Packs may be made of all gear wrapped inside tarp - still must have
shoulder straps and tumpline (I KNOW the voyageurs only used
tumplines - we are not voyageurs - please take my word for it)
- There will be one (only one) firelock, one saw, two axes, one
filter, one canvas water bucket, one food pack, one nest of kettles - you may be required
to carry one of the above
-Period correct gear (post Revolution - 1800) except for canoe, life
jacket - camera and mat pad (ground may be very cold) allowed. All other gear, including food packaging, must be period correct.
- One pair hard sole shoes (cut down military low quarters work best
for strength and ability to get in pack when not in use) and two pair
low soft moggasins required - NO boots (except bourgeouis and clerk) - NO high mocs
- One canvas or oil cloth rain poncho required
-Lightweight tandem canoe - about 60 pounds max - with good yoke and
yoke pads.
-Bring NO cooking gear, only cup, sthingy and bowl - wood if possible, except bourgeouis and clerk - who should have pewter or sterling poringer, and two tine fork, knife, and sthingy.
-all food will go in a seperate food pack and must be checked by the
food czar before departure.
- one extra paddle to each two man canoe
Participants will sleep two to an 8'X 10' (at least) canvas or oil cloth tarp.
These rules are essential to a good trip that allows everyone to get
across portages in good condition and keep traveling
Essential gear: Warm wool clothes, several pair wool socks or
stockings, hat or cap, one cotton or linen shirt, neck scarf, wool
gloves, two thick wool blankets. sheath knife, flint and steel,
compass, (at least one to a canoe), extra rope
