Kawishiwi ... the word comes from Kashwi?... pronounced Cash Way... meaning "half way"? I've had many discussions regarding the meaning and the pronunciation of Kawishiwi.
Half way?...huh?...yes there is more to it. If you look in Sigurd Olson's "Singing Wilderness" in Chapter # 2 you'll find a wonderful description of the Kawishiwi River and the Chippewa's definition.
Quoting S Olson
"To the Chippewa’s that sprawling series of lakes and rivers known as the Kawashiway was a land of mystery. Bounded by brooding stands of pine, its waters were dark, their origins unknown. According to the ancients, the land belonged to those who had gone, was forbidden to those that lived. From the Algonquin KAW meaning "no" and Ashaway meaning “the place in between," it took its name: "no place between," a spirit land."
If you are to call Kawishiwi lodge the name will be pronounced as Kawishiway. If you talk to some they will say wee. I think it is just because that is how it looks to be...just a natural to say it with the wee, but the ancients said "way" and this is my understanding of the proper pronunciation.

"way" is my understanding as well.
Now, how about the proper pronouniation of "Chippewa"? I'm not sure that a lot of folks realize that the Ojibway and Chippewa are the same. In fact, though spelled very differently, the pronounciation is just a variation of the same word.
Most folks say, chip-pi-wa. Actually it is much closer to chib-wa. The "O" and the "J" from Ojibway are slurred into "ch". So instead of "O-jib" we have "chib".
Chippewa = chib wa Ojibway = O jib wa

I now pronounce "Kawishiwi" like Voyeageur North, but I sometimes vary it and say "way" at the end (inspired in part by Kawishiway). I'm not sure there is one "right" way to pronounce this particular word, since the English is already a corruption of the Ojibwa/Chippewa. (Coincidence: I was reading the chapter in the Singing Wilderness mentioned by Kawishiway just the other night.)
But I do know that before I was pronouncing it wrong -- even if there isn't one right way, there are wrong ways! I just couldn't get the accent figured out. It's not obvious if you just read the word. I think I tried to say something like COW-a-SHE-wee. Hmmmm . . . Say that aloud, and you will know it just ain't right.
By the way, WW, I'm not an English teacher. I do make my living using the English language as a lawyer. I love words, especially place names.
Question about Ojibwa/Chippewa: Has anyone else noticed that Ojibwa is usually used in northern Minnesota and Ontario, but Chippewa seems more common in Wisconsin? Why is that?
Final comment: It will be interesting to see if Reddcin can still say "Quetico" at the next platyfest after a few platys!

lol Hoho. I'm having trouble an hour away from the computer with that word, I guess old habits are hard to break. I was telling my husband how to say it last night and had to look up this post again lol. Now I can get it as long as I remember to "question" Quetico. It also helps to remember to make the ti sound more like a di. Poor QP.. I have been pronouncing his full name wrong for years

I have noticed the different areas saying Chippewa or Ojibway.
Gary Gotchnik from Wilderness Outfitters is part Native and he says Chippewa. Chip a wa (tho it sometimes seems to be missing the middle syllable when said quickly.)

this isn't on spelling or pronunciation, but for the smiley icons here.
How in the heck do I just do a "normal" smiley face?
I keep getting the smiley in the boat!
