You know...I have to be honest... Geo. Now that you have introduced a second rock statue pile, I think I did like your buddy and went the wrong way...as, although branches and twigs were laid down in the muck, I did loose balance and step off, sinking past my knee, with pack on my back and canoe overhead. I think it was then that I gave up on babying my canoe attempting to prevent all scratching that I could and just gave my best, pushing forward with the nose down to lift my self out of the muck with out removing my pack or canoe from my head. There were a couple more incidents along trail that I'll eventually share that happened on my solo July 2004. I guess these are just some of the dangers of wilderness travel that are a bit more prevalent on a solo.
If I'm ever that way again, on this particular portage area, I'll look for the route you suggested, Geo. I thought I took the right one...There was another to the right that looked worse? Maybe it was to the left. Seemed there was a path off to the left at the bottom and end of the southern end of the portage that looked as though it wasn’t used as much. Now I'm not so sure. But I do not remember seeing the second statue you have introduced, as If I had, I would have photographed it. Thank you for sharing your photo. Thank God for the rock statue guides. What a neat treat they are to find and see.
