I understand the old growth pine areas around McNiece and Shan Walshe were burned as part of a prescribed fire in 2006. Anyone been in the area since then? Just curious as to the status of those lakes, was it a crown fire or confined to the understory, how are the campsites, etc? Thanks in advance!

Yes I was through that area in Sept 2007. It appeared that the inital burn was closer to Kahshahpiwi. Scared remains of bare rock and trees with no limbs Up most of the mid section of Kahshahpiwi's east shore. We portaged from Kash. to McNiece the area on both ends of the portage were spared. However on McNiece most of the north shore was burned. Not as bad as on Kash. as there were green areas scattered throughout. We camped on the northeast side on the hump just before heading south to Walshe Lake. Campsite was spared, barely! Heading south to Walshe once again you will see burn remains on McNiece. The island sustained extensive damage as did the shore line on both sides. By the time we reached the portage to Walshe it was greening up again. It certainly did not effect the fishing on McNiece ;D Going in Kash. we headed to Trant once again the east side of Kash was burned up to the bay area heading into Trant. Here is a map I found online that shows te burn area on Kahshahpiwi. www.ontarioparks.ca/english/planning_pdf/quet/quet_fig_19.pdfqp
