I am planning to do my 1st trip from the Gunflint area.
I am looking for information on route options, good campsites, fishing spots (if I take a pole) & must see sites. We are planning on 5 days out of SeaGull in Sept.
We travel everyday & double portage most of the time. I am looking at a loop through Knife & haven't ruled out a day or day trip into Quetico to see Silver Falls. Does anyone know if you need a permit to paddle up to the falls & out the same day?

Hi Troy,
Not much help here, though I have tripped off the Gunflint Trail a lot. I have never entered Seagull. However, I will in just a few days. I enter Seagull on August 1st. I will be staying at the Way of the Wilderness Bunkhouse the night before. They have a little cafe there, too. I've stayed there before and can recommend them.
We are leaving our trip pretty open - 6 days/5 nights. The one goal I have is Wisini Lake. We'll probably make Wisini on Day 2. From there, we have no plans. We may go out the way we came, head up through Knife and out Sag, or ... ?
Anyway, hopefully I'll have a trip report posted before you leave. Maybe it will be usefull to you.
Give yourself at least an hour and a half to travel from Grand Marais to the entry point. Keep your eye out for road crossing moose. Trail Center is a nice lunch stop (before or after the trip). Good food and beer.

The only time I've been on Seagull was mid-summer and we had a lot of trouble finding an open BWCA site on it or on the few small lakes adjacent to it. Very busy spot. Sag is also busy in high season on the BDub side but has lots of nice campsites to choose from. At the end of the Gunflint is a DNR campground which is also probably busy, but also very very nice. I've been there early and late in the season and have had no problems with crowds. There are a couple really nice BWCA beach sites on the route toward Swamp Lake from Sag, which may not be as busy. Also a great Canadian island site in that channel, just west of the Cache Bay entrance and the Ranger station there. IC

Thanks IC,
We will be in over Labor Day weekend, but you know me..... I am not afraid to paddle hard to leave the crowds behind me.

Looks like my entry point area is getting a face lift..... the area we planned to paddle is now consumed in flames. We still plan on the trip & I should get some unique photos.
Bannock, You just got back from that area I believe, Did you see any of the fire?
Looking forward to a report.

I'm getting the report together -- probably another day or two.
We saw nothing of the fire and we stayed on Seagull our last night. We knew nothing of it until two days after we got home. The fire actually started the day before we entered. A lightning strike. Full fledge firefighting didn't start until the day after we left.
It doesn't surprize me that this happened. While we were there it was hot, windy, and dry. I told my trip mates that we really had to watch our campfire. Conditions were right for a wildfire. Little did I know that one was already happening. I'll get the report out soon.

Oh, I forgot. We did see the Forest Service float planes flying everyday. We knew something was up but figured it was just preventive. Didn't know they were actually watching a fire.
