Kawish, I have a May trip planned to Weasel Lake PMA and July solo to Weeney Lake PMA. I called the LaCroix Ranger District Office (218)666-0020 the other day for my Weeney Lake reservation. The lady was VERY helpful! She gave me info on the lakes I wanted to visit (portage descriptions or lack there of) and she is mailing me the USFS maps of all the PMA's showing boundarys ect. She is also sending me a copy of an OLD USFS overview map of all the PMA's. You might try giving them a call. I think they are just happy to have someone to talk to, being Jan. and all

I just got the PMA maps from the USFS today. They are great not much detail or any thing, but they clearly show the boundarys and the different zones inside the PMA. I have started to compare them with the Swansons page and found that a couple of lakes that Swansons list as being in PMA,s are not. Not a big deal but it could affect camping if you bushwhack into a lake with no sites and it is not in a PMA you would not legally be able to camp there. Right?? BTW-I love the swanson page ton of great info there

Beavers look at your PMA map and answer a question for me.
Is Contentment Lake (southwest of Finger and Thumb) in the PMA or only Brigand? I have heard conflicting reports on weather Contentment is in the PMA or not.

Thanks for the info Beavers. I'm going to call up the LLC Ranger Station in the next few days to get the PMA info. I figured I would wait a little so they don't get 10 calls all at once and stop being nice.
In the meantime, I've been thinking about getting some old maps of the areas that still show the old portages and campsites that are no longer maintained. Beavers, is any of that information on the maps the USFS sent? If so, which map, so I can ask for it by name?
I sent emails yesterday to Fisher and McKenzie asking if they still stock old editions of their maps that would have this information. Anyone know how old the maps would need to be to show the pre-PMA portages and campsites? If I get any positive info from the companies I will pass it on.

One thing I have noticed with Fisher And Mckenzie maps is the Mckenzie maps show campsites in the PMA's and even some portages. The Fisher maps I have do not show anything in PMA's The PMA thing started in the 90's right? Before then were all the portages and campsite maintained or were some of them dropped from the maint. list long before that? When I talked to the Ranger from the La Croix dist. she said she went to Contentment and Brigand over 20 years ago and it was a bushwhack then. Anyone know PMA history? :P #nosmileys#nosmileys

Twenty some years ago May and I wandered into Fish Lake. We thought the portages were pretty awful but that was ok as we wanted to get off the beaten track. Next problem: all the campsites marked on our map were horribly overgrown and didn't have fire grates or thunder boxes. The fishing was good and we didn't see another canoe in there.
We made it a day trip and it was several years later that we learned about PMA's.
