I am fairly harmless, unless someone gets me riled, and that takes alot. Sorry to hear you had to fend off another dog, but that be the owner's fault more than the breed or dog. My dogs work everyday with children in a residential program. However, I will admit they will stand their ground against anything they think is hurting someone in the family. Brian

Ok...Brian, first of all my apologies for mistyping GHP instead of GSP in my previous post. I corrected it.
Brian with an i, I am Bryan with a y. Lucky us, imagine that.
I suppose this tale must be told after all.
It was back in late July when I had decided to paddle along the Big Sioux River here at home and to gain access to the river I went to a local park that was featuring a new dog run with a fenced in area. A man was throwing a frisbee that his dog (German Shorthairs) were having fun retreiving. The dogs were fast and looked like they were having a blast.
I rarely leash Oliver while I am carrying my yak or my canoe as it just an accident waiting to happen tripping over the leash imo.... So of Oliver the Explorer (a Schitzu) and I go. Oliver is ahead of me a by a bit, as the norm, but today he decides to pee on this fence the other two dogs are contained in.
Call it bad timing but the man had released the frisbee and it seemed to be traveling in our general direction. The frisbee hit the fence just a foot or two from where Oliver had his leg raised and this did not even seem to startle the little guy. The German Short hair is running and now barking. Hmnn, I think, but there is the fence, so I continue carrying my yak towards the river landing.
Oliver had finshed hi job and now is digging his feet in claiming the area as schitzu's sometimes do after marking the territory.
Upon arriving at the fence, the the German Short Hair is barking and manages to push it's waY under a poorly constructed fence, grabs Oliver by the neck and starts shaking Oliver violently like a rabbit. Oliver starts to whine in a way I had never heard, a cry for help, a fear for his life.
I have by now dropped my yak and am running towards the dogs and yelling myself at the top of my throat. Before I arrive the Short hair has ripped the skin of Oliver neck and thrown him and goes back after Oliver picks him up the same way and begins the same procedure, going after the neck break. Oliver's body is loosening as the muscles tear, soon it will be over if I don't get there.
My brother had told me long ago, that if you get in a fight with a dog, go for the throat. I was praying his words where true. When I made it to the dogs I hit the Short hair in the throat a couple times and she dropped Oliver and backed off. I craddled Oliver and continued to yell while Oliver continued to whine.
An immediate trip to the vet was in order. The vet made a after hours emergency visit and the owner of the other dog paid for it all. Seems he had gotten Molly from the pound and she had been mistreated by here former owners. Molly had some anger managment issues that they where still trying to work through.
I'm sure I could have looked into the man having the dog put down, but he loved Molly, I could tell, and seemed very willing to resolve these issues.
Oliver's wounds were near the spinal coulumn so the Doc decided it best not to operate and let the wounds heal on their own. Putting Oliver under the knife was more of a risk to do any form of sticthing. It was decided on to give Oliver a cortizone shot, some good antibiotics shot and watch him closely.
Oliver was not the same for sometime. He mainly slept and moved slowely for many days. I was hoping he'd recover in time for one more trip North this year and he did, just in time.
There ya have it. A tale I thought I'd never tell.
Glad to have you with us GSP Seems we have more than one dog lover on board. Bog's is here to!
