I've gone thru lots of tents over the years. Started with a $5 pup tent I got at a garage sale when I was 12. "Graduated" to a Eureka Timberline when I was in high school. Got a job with EMS after college, had 3 or 4 of their tents. These days I've narrowed it down a bit. I've got a REI Taj 3 for my wife and I for BWCA/St. Croix/Namekagon paddle trips, a Integral Designs Bivy that I use for spring / fall trips when the bugs aren't bad and a Empire Canvas Works Snowtrekker for winter use.
This year I'm trying out one of Dan Cooke's (Cooke Custom Sewing) "Lean-Two's" It's a modified Whelen Tent type tarp, but it's got a sod cloth and a screen, has a 7'x10' footprint, packs up about the size of a nalgene bottle and weighs about 2 lb. Really looking forward to seeing how that performs...if it's good in rough weather, it's about as lightweight and roomy as I can imagine!

I like this idea, but do not see it in this configuration on their website. The whelan tarp is there, but no mention of sod cloth and screen combination. Is this something really new that has been promoted yet or is it a custom job they are doing for you?

I thought my Eureka Backcountry 2 was light at 4 pounds 11 oz. I've had this tent in some rough weather to and it's a dandy. But 2 pounds and the size of a nalgene bottle. Now that my idea of a pack tent. With a tent like that I could cut my total pack weight for a week to under 45 pounds. I'll have to stop in an visit Cooke's on my next trip to Ely. qp
