Concerning the Primitive Management Areas and perhaps securing a permit for one of these areas in the future, my eyes are on the Rock Island Lake area as I understand it is scenic, this being in the Weasel Lake PMA. Other PMA’s I’m aware of are Drag PMA and Fungus PMA. I’ve also had a hankering to see Hope Lake in the Fungus PMA, perhaps someday. And there is still the journey I want to make up Angle Worm to the Sunday Lake. Is that area also PMA, around Sunday Lake? Does any one have any PMA experience they can share and does anyone know of other PMA areas I haven’t listed. Is there any form of reference for this topic of PMA specific to the Boundary Waters?

kawishiway, Check out this link under the PMA heading towards the bottom. The Swansons put together a great site with all kinds of little information tidbits. www.rook.org/earl/bwca/index.htmlJim

Thank you. I've seen the Swansons page before but was unaware of the PMA area they have untill now. Very cool page, and very helpfull.
Any one have any experiences, stories and suggestions with PMA trips they might like to share?

We came through the Weasle PMA with the intention of camping at Rock Island Lake but our timing was wrong and because of weather and wind we decided to move on while we still could. The campsite there used to be an official BWCA site and is still nice. The portages and landings on both sides of lake are horrendous--I figure the lake was turned into PMA so they wouldn't have to maintain them. Check my September trip report.
Beautiful scenery and lots of solitude--at a price. Also beware of boulders lurking just below the surface near the rocks in the middle. They're great canoe grabbers.

WM-you are right about the portages into and out of Weasel lake PMA and Rock Island. Dificult for sure, a little hard to find and follow, but the campsite and solitude is outstanding. The work certainly has its reward of staying in such a nice place, where few others ever see. Glad you had the chance to pass through-did you see any moose while you were between Clearwater and Lake Two?

In 2002 we came from LLC through Iron to the Beartrap River throught Sunday and out Mudro. This was the trip that convinced me Q is where I wanted to be. Real quiet and saw no one from Iron to Thunder. Portages had way more moose tracks than human. Lots of beaver dams. Got as lost as I've been trying to find Beartrap River from Iron. Got a good picture of an eagle on the 'rock pile' that I think was meant to mark the entry to the river. Jeff

No, Bogwalker, no moose, but a fascinating turtle that we raced down the Clearwater portage. Looking back on those portages, (in the middle of winter now that my body has recovered!) was it really all that bad? How quickly we forget the pain. I think the worst parts of the portages were the landings--and trying to figure out the best one to choose. I can understand your fascination with the area. It's worth the price you have to pay on the portages.
