Got a post from Tara Prindle tonight. Tara is the originator of "Nativetech" one of the best sites on the web catalogueing native skills. Tara lives in Conneticut. I've been after her for years to go canoe-tripping. She has finally decided to pry herself loose and come for rice harvest next fall. I'd like to make a BWCA canoe trip out of it. As we usually rice outside the BWCA, I was wondering if anyone has spotted unusually good rice beds this year - about September. We need a spot where the rice is really thick.
We used to rice on the Little Indian Sioux, below the Echo Trail and above Little Trout, but there isn't much for designated camp sites close - as I recall.

Near the Isabella River,...........
Rice Lake and the Little Isabella River
We saw tons of wild rice there in late August in fact, when we were on the L Isab, we even had a bunch of it fall in the canoe as we made our way through!

Thanks VN!
Isabella River , and the Island River, along with Little Indian Sioux, are some of the places I was considering. Just haven't been there in about four years - and longer than that for LIS.
Isabella River would be good for (relatively) easy access and campsites.
Any other places that come to mind - let me know.

PG,
The biggest & most abundant rice beds I have seen were on the Nina Moose River. ;D
Alot of unharvested rice along that stretch.

Out of the BWCA are Big Rice Lake, SW of Tower, MN; and the Gold Mine area of Vermilion River, South of Crane Lake not far from West end of Echo Trail. Nina Moose can have good rice as WW suggested and is in the BWCA.

WW:
Nina Moose would be good. Bet there might be a lot of traffic though. Suppose you could take the western fork (into Ramshead - I think? I really have a rotton memory). That wouldn't see so much traffic.

Thanks!
