Anyone ever been and felt the awe? What about the legends and the history one might carry in their mind of an area visited and left behind still primative?

Yes! I was there in June 2004. Good job of getting the mist to show in your photo, that is the Falls' signature. I camped on the little island in the channel, just south of the Falls, which turned out to be a very nice spot. In the morning there was a traffic jam there with three or four other canoe parties. Interesting to watch and wait patiently for my turn. As for the portage, I thought it was fairly difficult in terrain. Have you seen "Where Two Worlds Meet" by Minnesota Historical Society Press. Lots of fur trade information, artifacts, and reports about underwater archaeology finds in this river and Basswood, etc.

Great picture K, That photo captures the power of it. No, haven't been there. Not yet. I'd hate to inadvertantly ride that one out. -YB

I've heard and read some over the years about that great Indian Battle that took place above Silver Falls. My understanding is that the Sioux were nearly wiped out from that battle. Also read about the women and childern hiding in the bay on sag and something about a cave. I beleive that the Indian Paintings there on sag have something to tell about that battle. I sure would like to know more! IC is that book still in print? qp

I believe you can get "Where Two Worlds Meet" from the Minnesota Historical Society, they have an extensive library of books to offer on all of Minnesota. Check out their web site, I am sorry, I do not know what it is off hand. There is not much about Indian wars in that volume. However, there is another about the History of the Ojibway, also I think available from MHS, which has a lot of detail on the wars which took place in Northern and middle Minnesota. IC

From the First Nations issues of consequence, here is a link I came across from this or another board. It has a nice outline of the Ojibwe. Jim www.tolatsga.org/ojib.html

I'm with you Ho Ho...That hndrsdnpce (enter SD in peace? What does it mean? ) guy is full of useful info. I'm glad Jim has joined us with his contributions...and he climbed up that mountain and all... sky rockets in flight... all good stuff! Thanks Jim. imo...it is tough to do a sloppy job at taking a photo of Silver Falls. I'd love to hear more history if any one has more, admittedly the last link is hard to beat. IC...yes..that looked like a good camp spot that you found. And a good book (again) that you recomended. I should hope to find that one on my book shelf some day. I camped below the falls. Nice spot also. FYI... QP, Sioux is French for Snake. The "Sioux" is a name given to them..by the white man. Living in the midst of the "Sioux Nation" I'm reminded of this frequently. Lakota, Dakota, etc. k
